NICOBAR DISTRICT

     Separated from Andamans group of Island by 145 Kms, wide 10 degree channel, Nicobars District has an area of 1841 square kms, comprising 22 Islands Twelve of which are inhabited.  The maximum length of Nicobars is 310 Kms and maximum width is 57.96 Kms.  The extreme Southern most ‘Pigmalion Point’ presently known as Indira Point which is also southern most point of India, is 310 Kms from Car Nicobar and barely 140 Kms from Sumatra Island (Indonesia).

Population  :  

    As per 1991 census, population of the district is 39021 of which 24929 are tribals.  The following tables indicates the  geographical name, native names, area in square kilometers and population of the Islands in the District :-

Tribal Reserve Area

All the Islands have been declared Tribal Reserve Area under Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribals) Regulation, 1956 with the exception of eastern coast of Great Nicobar, comprising 7 villages, which is non-reserve area, where 330 Ex/Servicemen families were settled under Accelerated development Programme of Ministry of Labour and Rehabilitation in 1969-72. According to the Regulation, no non-tribal is permitted to carry on any business or acquire land in tribal reserve without permission of Lt. Governor.

The violation of Andaman & Nicobar (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, is cognizable vide Sec. 9 and subsequent notification No. AN/PATR/9(1)/6 dated 6th May 1957. These offences form one of the major Crime in the Nicobar District. 

HISTORY

The Nicobar Police District came in existance in year 1991. In year 1991, General Police District of Andaman & Nicobar Islands was separated into Andaman Police District and Nicobar Police District. But for policing, for all other purposes a separate district with headquarter at Car Nicobar as created as early as in 1974.

Till the creation of separate Police District, there was one Dy.S.P at Car Nicobar.

Police Stations 

There are five police stations in Nicobar District namely  PS Car Nicobar,  PS Nancowry,  PS Katchal, PS Teressa and  PS C/Bay. There are two SDPOs posted in Nicobar District.

Besides five Police Stations in the district, there are four Look Out Post at  (i) Chowra   (ii)   Pillomillow  (iii) Tillangchong  and  (iv) Kondul. They are under the command of the Dy. S.P, Special Armed Police and under overall command of DIG(L&O).
